With the booming demand of CBD among all generations, it should come as no surprise that those that suffer from arthritis (swelling and tenderness of one or more joints) have tried or are curious about trying CBD to help manage their arthritis symptoms. So much so that the Arthritis Foundation initiated its own consumer survey to learn more about CBD for arthritis.

Survey of 2,600 Arthritis Patients

In 2019, the Arthritis Foundation conducted a survey of more than 2,600 arthritis patients to learn about CBD use and experiences among them. Below we highlight some powerful data points.

CBD EFFECTIVENESS

Roughly 3 out of 4 arthritis patients found that CBD was either effective or very effective in relieving several arthritis symptoms.

WHY CBD WORKS

Some scientific clinical studies suggest that CBD provides multi-purpose benefits as a result of the natural existing therapeutic properties of this particular cannabinoid and the manner in which CBD influences the body’s endocannabinoid system. Some of these therapeutic benefits include anti-inflammatory promoting effects, analgesic (pain relief) properties, sleep aid properties, joint health properties, and antidepressant properties. These natural existing properties fit squarely with the type of benefit sought by the arthritis patients in the above survey and generally by the arthritis population.

You may be wondering, if CBD works, why didn’t it help every arthritis patient that responded to the above survey? That’s a fair question. The answer is not black and white.  There are numerous variables that can result in different experiences.

A quality CBD topical cream should provide some form of relief to the target area applied. Depending on the cause or type of pain, not all topical creams, including those formulated with CBD, may work.  For example, nerve pain caused by a herniated disk in the cervical spine (i.e., the neck) is rather deep and will likely require more more than just a topical relief cream.

A quality CBD oil tincture (a liquid form of CBD) can vary in results due to various individual factors such as a person’s gender, weight, age and health status, amongst others. Also, factors such as the amount used, the frequency of use, the type of hemp extract formulation in the CBD product (i.e., a CBD isolate versus a CBD Full spectrum), and the length of use can also play a significant role in a person’s experience.

AMOUNT OF CBD OIL TO TAKE

At this time, there are no established clinical guidelines on the right amount of CBD Oil to use. If you’re new to CBD, it’s best to start with a low amount and increase that amount gradually overtime if needed.  The CBD product’s label provides a suggested serving amount that you should initially follow to see if that amount is the right amount for you.

Otherwise, the Arthritis Foundation recommends starting with a few milligrams of CBD oil sublingually (i.e., under the tongue) twice a day, and

If relief is inadequate after one week, increase the dose by that same amount.

If needed, go up in small increments over several weeks.

If you find relief, continue taking that dose twice daily to maintain a stable level of CBD in the blood.

All in all, your chances of having to increase or decrease your CBD amount should be expected. No two people are the same and the amount of CBD that’s right for you is just as unique as you. For this reason, make sure to monitor the amount you take and its effect on you, and then adjust accordingly.

No matter the amount taken, you can feel rest assured that no amount of CBD will make you feel “high” like marijuana would. This is because CBD does not produce any intoxicating effects.

Lastly, unlike marijuana, CBD has no potential for abuse or dependence, including any withdrawal side effects or symptoms.
